A cosmetic dentist has a whole armory of procedures that can be used when designing a new smile for a patient; the procedures range from simple tooth whitening to full dental implants. One of the most popular and most often requested procedures are San Jose porcelain veneers.

Porcelain veneers are very thin shields produced from porcelain, they are designed and produced to fit perfectly over the front of a tooth, the part which is visible when smiling or laughing. These veneers are permanent, they are used to alter ones appearance by hiding or camouflaging teeth which are stained, chipped or otherwise undesirable and yet still sound. It takes at least two appointments to complete this particular cosmetic procedure.

Like most dental procedures which are restorative in nature, impressions are made. Impressions can be made prior to the procedure, during it and if necessary, once the procedure has been completed. The impressions are used to make a replica of your teeth; the dentist uses this replica to decide how he will prepare the teeth for the bonding of the veneers once they are made. The dentist removes a little of the enamel surface of the teeth and takes an impression which is then used by the dental technicians to produce the veneers.

Between the patient and the dentist a choice of color is made. The final choice usually takes into account the experience the dentist has. As the patient, the only thing of concern is bright, sparkling teeth, these can actually look false. The dentist knows how to take into account your skin tone; this gives you the look of flawless teeth but they look natural as they take the surroundings into account. To be 100 percent accurate in the choice of color the dentist may ask the patient to visit the dental lab where custom shades can be formulated if necessary. The objective is to match ones complexion and take into account the color of the surrounding teeth that will not be fitted with a veneer.

Within a week or so of the first dental appointment the San Jose porcelain veneers will be ready for fitting. The porcelain veneers will be fitted precisely on the teeth that were prepared, once the dentist is happy with the fit; the veneers are bonded with very strong dental adhesive. The adhesive is set with a bright curing light; any excess is removed by the dentist using conventional tools.

Once fitted you can expect the porcelain veneers to last a good 10 to 15 years but regular cleanings from the dentist are still recommended.
