Waterfowl Hunting Tips to Get You Started

Waterfowl hunting is a fun and exciting activity that has been around for decades. It is a sport that is about more than getting a number of hits. It’s about being outdoors and enjoying nature. It is about the different techniques involved in hunting. It is an enjoyable opportunity to bond with those who’ve accompanied you for the trip.

However, many people don’t find the experience as exciting and as enjoyable as it ought to be. This is because they fail to prepare for it. If you’re getting started in this sport, the following tips will help you make the most out of your trip.

Hunting grounds

Waterfowl congregate in many different areas. However, the most obvious place to look for them is near or on water bodies such as flooded fields and lakes. It is therefore important to come with the appropriate equipment to ensure that your hunting trip is a success. Flooded fields and lakes may mean coming with a canoe or boat.

If you’re booking into a hunting lodge for your trip, call ahead to find out more about the hunting grounds and any equipment you may need to carry. The lodge may provide you with some equipment on hire. If you don’t want to purchase your own equipment, hiring their equipment would be a great option.

Guns and shell size

It’s important to choose the right gun and shell size for waterfowl hunting. One of the best guns to use would be a 12 gauge pump action shotgun. Your choice of gun however may be limited by the regulations in the state that you will be hunting in. In Texas, only shotguns that are no larger than the 10-gauge that are fired from the shoulder and are incapable of holding more than three shells at a time can be used.

The shells you use should not contain lead shots. Approved shots in Texas include steel (this includes steel coated with copper, nickel or zinc), tungsten-iron and bismuth-tin.

What to wear

This largely depends on where you will be hunting. It is therefore important to find out about the hunting grounds beforehand. If you’ll be hunting in a flooded field, you’ll need to wear waders that come up to your chest or insulated boots to keep you warm.

Get the right decoys

You need to get decoys to attract the waterfowl. You if you’re hunting in a river or creek that is deep, ensure that the decoys are heavily weighted. Decoys on flooded fields don’t require a lot of weight.
