Many different types of valves are available for plumbers and other pipe fitters. They include ball valves, check valves, butterfly valves, and diaphragm valves. In addition, there is also a combination valve. These are ball check valves.
What Is a Ball Check Valve?
A check valve can be of plastic or metal. It has several different names in the industry – most of which describe its function. It is a:
- Non-return valve
- One-way valve
- Clack valve
In other words, the terms indicate this type of valve only allows the fluid it controls to pass through in one direction and one direction only. A ball check valve is a type or check valve usually small – no larger than 2-inches. As the name indicates, it uses a ball. The ball is a control mechanism. It covers a round opening, therefore separating the first and second ports.
What Do Ball Check Valves Do?
Like all check valves, a ball check valve only permits the water that enters to flow in one direction. In the case of this type of check valve, when the fluid enters, it pushes the ball forward. When the fluid is shoved back, the ball becomes pressed into the circular opening. This produces a seal. This then draws the fluid into the second port and out in the planned direction.
The actions of a ball check valve make it one of the few valves that are truly self-automated. It is an excellent device for regulating viscous material. They come available with or without threaded and socket weld.

Industries of various types rely on check valves to control flow in a one-way direction. Thermostatic or metal ball check valves are an inexpensive, reliable and very effective means of ensuring a fluid flows only one way. Industries and plumbers often employ them to prevent back-flow.
