Have A Plan
Whether you are new to New Jersey or come from a long line of East Coasters, do a bit of research on seasonal trends so you know what to expect. Discuss evacuation routes and escape plans with your family and neighbors, and make sure that everyone in the house knows where to find essentials such as a first aid kit and non-perishable goods. If you have children, impress upon them the importance of remaining calm in a crisis.
Back Up The Back-Up
Generator or not, there is no reason to not take extra precautions when it comes to a power outage (for all you know, you’ll have to move an elderly neighbor from her darkened house!). Have a few candles and enough flashlights for each member of your family, and keep a stock of batteries in an easily accessible place in case the outage lasts longer than you expect.
Go Old School
Your weather app may have warned you about the storm, but it won’t be of much help if your phone can’t charge. Keep a battery-powered radio on hand to keep up to date with weather and news updates, especially if you are waiting for rescue or emergency personnel. While you still have access to your phone, send out as many emails or texts as you can to inform others of your location, condition, and stock of provisions.
