How do you find the right vet for your family dog? There are a lot of veterinarians sprinkled throughout urban and rural areas and while there may be a great number of options, you’re probably going to want to find someone close by. Checking for a vet in your neighborhood when you bring home a new puppy as well as when you adopt an older dog from a shelter is important. The sooner you establish a relationship with a local vet the better equipped you’ll be going forward. Why?

Preventative Vet Care

Preventative vet care is the best approach and can help reduce the likelihood of unexpected illnesses.  When you go for a check-up to a new vet you also get an opportunity to size up that vet. If you aren’t happy with the doctor, aren’t happy with the front office staff, the hours are inconvenient, and / or you aren’t happy with their policies or just simply aren’t sure if this is the perfect vet or not you can take the time to look at a few other options to make a decision. This way you’ll have an established connection with a vet office if an emergency should occur.

Choosing the Right Vet Before an Emergency

When there’s an emergency with your pet there isn’t typically time to be a discerning pet owner. You want your pet seen and you want that to happen fast. But if you have an established vet you’ll know what to expect. You’ll know who you are dealing with, rather than leaving it to chance.

Many people who leave negative reviews for vet clinics had no prior knowledge of that clinic and used them in an emergency. Because of that, they didn’t get familiar with the vet’s policies, they didn’t test drive that vet office to see if it was a good fit. And if things didn’t go so well, they blame the vet. Some vet offices have better customer skills than others, of course, but working with a stranger in an emergency could be disconcerting. If you have a relationship with a vet you’ll have a better chance of knowing what to expect and you may even have an easier time getting an appointment because the vet office will prioritize existing patients for urgent appointments.
