Substance abuse can be incredibly harmful. From drugs to alcohol, a person can get addicted to many types of substances. Unfortunately, excessive consumption of anything can be pretty damaging. There are many cases in which people who suffered from crippling addictions lost everything they had. But does that mean that there is no hope? While substance abuse can be pretty harmful, there are special treatment centres to help people now. There are many centres dedicated to substance abuse treatment in Pretoria. Some of these are run by the government while most are privately funded by charitable organizations.
If you wish to admit somebody to a substance abuse treatment program, there are many things that you must consider. The first thing is the course of treatment. Basically, there are two different types of ways by which patients are treated. There’s the holistic program, which focuses more on mental and spiritual health, and then there’s the traditional treatment program. The latter is more concerned with the use of different medicines and harsh training regimes in order to move patients away from their addiction. Here’s what you need to know about both the programs:
The Holistic Approach
The holistic approach takes much longer to heal. When a patient is admitted, their life history is carefully studied. Then, a separate plan is created to help them. Trauma experts work with the patient in order to understand the primary cause of the addiction. There’s also a properly established detox facility, where customers can get rid of all harmful toxins in their body. There are licensed consultants and professionals always on hand in order to control any outburst.
Family involvement is a key part of the holistic approach. Rather than use medicines and force people to follow strict training programs, the holistic approach aims to change a person’s mentality. To do this, involving the family in the recovery plan is very important. It lays down the foundations of recovery and prevents relapses for years to come.
The Non-Holistic Approach
Often known as the “traditional” approach, the non-holistic approach is more concerned with a quick resolution. Whereas the holistic approach can take anywhere between six to twelve months, this one takes around three months. The traditional substance abuse treatment program includes the use of strong medicines and harsh treatment methods. Sometimes, shock treatment may also be used. The chances of relapse are very high for patients enrolled in traditional programs. The non-holistic approach does not change a person’s mindset towards addiction. They still view it as a means to get away from their problems, which is why they tend to relapse later on. That is why the holistic approach is much better.
